Isay Zolotnitsky, Ph.D. (1905-1994) was a remarkable person of rare education and knowledge. He was a polyglot, knowing eight languages. Zolotnisky has devoted the second part of his life to collection and classification of proverbs in different languages. The result was an extremely comprehensive dictionary of proverbs in seven european languages (Russian, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin). After his death, the family has published the most complete part of the dictionary as the Dictionary of Proverbs in Seven Languages.
At WikiProverbs, we continue the spirit of Dr. Zolotnitsky and act on promoting and popularizing the proverbs, those expressive and concise forms of human language. The idea of putting the dictionary on Web was born in 2006. The Wiki style publishing was chosen to reflect the spirit of free and shared resource. The popular free MediaWiki platform was selected for the implementation. The contents of the published dictionary has been layed as the core of the collection that will be extended by language enthusiasts across the world.
